Parthasarathi Bhattacharjee from MCS UK published a good article about customizations for Sharepoint sites and provided a list/map of ContentPlaceHolders of default.master as well as how to customize out-of-box web parts using CEWP and inject CSS and JavaScript into the page where it is placed.
